Blog Post # 10: What can we learn from Sir Ken Robinson?

Image of Educational Revolution sign

Sir Ken Robinson is truly a beautiful mind. He proposes letting go of stereotypes that encourage one path for students. I agree that education is not linear. Everyone's journey towards success does not include a college education. College can be a great stepping stone if one desires. While being formally educated I have been challenged to think in ways I never thought possible. While listening to Sir Ken Robinson that same awakening occurred again. I love the though of rising with an educational revolution. I am encouraged when I imagine playing a part in creating a new system instead of covering a broken one.

Blog Post #9: What can we learn from Mrs. Cassidy?

Image of an eye in a computer screen

Mrs. Cassidy's approach to using technology in her classroom was very approachable. I listened to her experiences and became hopeful that I can and will use technology to educate in a meaningful way. I would love to use Skype, Blogging, and Nintendo DS gaming systems is my classroom. Students' blogs would be literary art left online for families and students to review. I too would view a student reviewing past work as a way to collaborate and not as a mechanism for cheating.

Potential hindrances to using technology many include funding. Mrs. Cassidy was donated computers. There availability of resources for educational purposes is unknown at this time. I would face those hindrances by fundraising and requesting businesses donate computers. I also would do just as Mrs. Cassidy by requesting governmental funding for formal programs. I believe students would benefit from using her approach to obtain needed resources.

Project #14

stack of books

I would like to encourage my students to write their very own 10 page fiction book. I would start the project by passing out a rubric explaining exactly what is expected and how each element will be graded. I would start with students turning in subjects. I would then have them turn in a list of characters. I would follow up with brainstorming, outline, rough draft, final draft.

Project #13

drama masks

I would have a learning project where students were encouraged to find characters in literature that inspire them and to enact a monologue of how that character would feel if they were to time travel to today. I would encourage the students to wear costumes and hairstyles that their characters might wear. I would encourage them to bring any props that would help get him/her into character.

Many students spend hours of each day in front of a television watching drama unfold. I would encourage my student to take part in the drama in a healthy way instead of merely spectate. I would encourage students to "get up and move" like Michelle Obama. I would also enjoy stimulating each student's creativity.

Blog Post #8: What are 21st century learning and communication tools?

Sony Tablet

Khan Academy is a 21st century learning resource that can be utilized by students and educators. The web tool can offer global connections within seconds. The subject materials are easy to manage and are available for multiple educational levels. The Khan Academy offers a world class education for free. This is especially beneficial with the different state requirement for education in America. The website can be used to view instructional videos and work example problems. Video applications allow students to pause and rewind materials. I will allow the usage of the Khan Academy in my classroom as an aid to students. Kids holding the world

4th/5th Boys Scoil Fhursa Dublin, Ireland Ms. Toal Brad is my student He gave a review of his favorite movie Dodge ball with Ben Stiller I also enjoyed that film very much. I found the comedy hilarious. It was nice to see an unlikely group of outcasts become first a team, then friends, and finally a sort of family. I also enjoy movies where the small guy wins. This film shows that with hard work and teamwork, the weak can become strong. HS English Baldwin County, AL Mrs. Miller (EDM310 grad) Young Guwop He gave a summary of why he enjoyed playing basketball. Hi Young Guwop. Blog Post #7: What Can We Learn About Teaching and Learning From Randy Pausch?

Happy Face holding an apple

I truly enjoyed the video by Randy Pausch. I learned the most about teaching and learning from watching his actions. Near the beginning of the video Mr. Pausch shares that he has terminal cancer and only has a few months left to live. After hearing such heart breaking news I spent the rest of the video awed by his courage.
Friends helping one another

During this video Randy Pausch made me think of Erik Erikson's stages of psychosocial development. I specifically thought of generativity vs. stagnation. According to Erikson this is the second stage of adulthood and occurs between the ages of 35-64. During this time people target actions that gives them a sense of purpose. I was truly encouraged more by the fact that Pausch was teaching a lecture with such joy despite his circumstances than I was with techniques to overcome brick walls. He chose to give back instead of spend the end of his life afraid.
